The Cart before the Horse

I love the idea of getting things done and getting them done quickly. No need to mess around if we can go ahead and do something and get it over with. Efficiency is a favorite word of mine. Efficiency is asking and answering the question: "how can we get things done right?" However, sometimes we can get the cart before the horse if we fail to ask and answer the first question, which is most important: "what are the right things to do?" This should be the foundational question we ask ourselves. I believe Peter Drucker summed up this idea best when he said, "there is certainly nothing as useless as doing with great efficiency what shouldn't be done at all." We will only be effective as we learn to both do the right things and do things right.
